What is bmi?

The Body Mass Index(BMI) was developed by Belgium statistician Adolphe Quetelet (1796-1874), and was known as the Quetelet Index. BMI is also referred to as 'body mass indicator'.

 It is an internationally accepted measure of obesity. BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight in KG by height square in meters.

 BMI = Weight / (Height^2)

The resulting value is then interpreted as follows:

  • Below 18.5 : Underweight
  • 18.5 -24.9 : Normal
  • 25 - 29.9 : Overweight
  • 30 and Above : Obese
